How to store your long term food storage

As mentioned above, light and room temperature can greatly affect the longevity of your long term food storage.  So, to make sure your long term food storage items really last 30 years, it is important to remember the following things.

  • Temperature-Make sure to store your  at a temperature of 75°F (24°C) or even lower when possible. However, if your storage temperatures are higher, remember to rotate your products as needed to maintain their quality.
  • Moisture- An excess of moisture is the worst thing that can happen to your long term food storage.  So remember that it’s best to keep containers off of the floor to allow for air circulation.  A great way to do this by purchasing a few 2×4 wood beams from your local Home Depot or Lowe’s, cutting them to fit the floor length of your food storage room and then setting your food storage buckets on top of your beams.  Then, throw a few oxygen absorbing packets into your food storage buckets and containers to further reduce any moisture build up.
  • Light- Too much light exposure can be no bueno for any cooking oil you may be storing.  So a great way to protect your cooking oil and any other food storage products that could become exposed to too much light is by storing them in PETE bottles.
  • Insects and rodents- Despite our best efforts, insects sometimes get in to our homes and can become a real threat against our food storage supplies.  So, the best way to keep your food storage from being eaten by rodents and invested by insects, you can store your food in either plastic food storage buckets, foil bags, or PETE bottles.
