5 Ways to Survive Getting Lost in the Wilderness

Getting lost in the wilderness can be a terrifying experience.  Though all of us here at PARA hope you never find yourself lost in the wilderness, we know that this can be a situation even the most skilled outdoorsmen can find themselves in.  Recently we came across a local news report of a man getting lost here in the high Uintah mountains here in Utah.  Despite spending the majority of his adult years in this region, this highly skilled and experienced man wound up getting separated from his group and completely lost.  Sadly, search and rescue called off the search for this man yesterday; and he is still missing.  So, to help you and your loved ones from also getting lost in the wilderness, here are 7 things you should remember to do if you ever happen to find yourself lost.

5 Ways to Survive Getting Lost in the Wilderness

Though all of these survival tips are important to remember if you get lost in the wilderness, this first tip is the most important!


1) Stay where you are

If you happen to get lost in the wilderness, stay where you are!  Doing this will increase your chances of being rescued quickly.  However, if your current location is unsafe, walk to a safe location nearby and then stay where you’re at.

2) Think

When lost, it’s important to take some time to think about your current situation, assess what you have, and become aware of your location.

3) Signal for help

During the day, build a small fire with green leaves as your kindling to help produce a really smoky fire.  During the night, build a big and bright fire.  You can also use a mirror or flash light to signal for help and a can even spread out your brightest pieces of clothing on to tree branches and high focal points to draw the attention of rescue teams.

4) Build a shelter

You may be lost for a while.  So it’s important that you build some sort of shelter to protect you from the elements and any potential predators.

5) Fuel up

If you find yourself in survival situation, your body will need all the energy it can get. Make sure to fill up on any food you brought and don’t forget to stay hydrated too!  You can also find things to eat in nature.  Just remember to stay away from things you don’t recognize and avoid drinking unfiltered water.
