How to Prevent and Treat Heat Related Illnesses

During the summer, it’s hard to stay indoors when the sun is shining, the skies are blue, and the weather is warm.  But, if you spend too much time outside, you…and especially your kids, can get a heat related illness.   Which can be lethal if the heat related illness isn’t caught soon enough and treated.  So, to help you avoid that, we are going to share with you everything you need to know about heat related illnesses and how you should treat them.

How to Prevent and Treat heat Related Illnesses

Alright!  Before we dive in to how you should treat heat related illnesses, let’s talk about the types of heat related illnesses there are and what causes them.

Types of Heat Related Illnesses 

1) Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion occurs when your body loses large amounts of water and salt through lots of sweating that is brought on by hard physical labor or exercise.  Losing such a huge amount of important fluids can interrupt your body’s circulation and negatively effect your brain.

2) Heat Cramps

Like heat exhaustion, heat cramps are also brought on by losing large amounts of water and salt through lots of sweating as well as the loss of important nutrients like potassium and magnesium.

3) Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is the most serious heat related illness; and occurs when your body goes through long periods of exposure to heat.  Because of this, your brain loses it’s ability to regulate your body temperature, causing your body to lose it’s ability to cool down.

Heat Related Illness Symptoms

1) Heat Exhaustion

  • Heavy sweating
  • Cold, pale, and clammy skin
  • Fast, weak pulse
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fainting

2) Heat Cramps

  • Heavy sweating during intense exercise
  • Muscle pains of spasams

3) Heat Stroke

  • 103 F body temperature or higher
  • Hot, red, dry, or damp skin
  • Fast, strong pulse
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Losing conciousness

How to Treat Heat Related Illnesses

1) Heat Exhaustion

  • Move to a cool place
  • Loosen your clothes
  • Put cool, wet cloths on your body or take a cool bath
  • Sip water

Get medical help right away if…

  • You are throwing up
  • Your symptoms become worse
  • Your symptoms last longer than an hour

2) Heat Cramps

  • Stop physical activity and move to a cool place
  • Drink water of some kind of sports drink
  • Wait for cramps to go away before you do any more physical activity

Get medical help right away if…

  • Cramps last longer than an hour
  • You’re on a low sodium diet
  • You have heart problems

3) Heat Stroke

  • CALL 911 RIGHT AWAY-Heat stroke is a medical emergency!
  • Move the person to a cooler place
  • Help lower the person’s body temperature with cool cloths or a cool bath
  • Don’t give the person anything to drink
